Home Security Tips

1.   Consider changing all outside door locks when you move into a new Home.

2.   Front doors should have a BS.3621 5 Lever mortise lock fitted.

3.   Side and back doors ideally should be fitted with a 5 Lever mortise lock together with top and bottom security key operated mortise bolts.

4.   French windows / patio doors should be fitted where possible with top and bottom key operated bolts.

5.   Fit key operated window locks to all downstairs and first floor accessable windows, there are various types available to suit almost all types of windows, including UPVC.

6.   Have security lighting fitted to the front and rear of your property that will come on when someone approaches, remember Burglars dont like to attract attention.

7.   Don't leave spare keys in obvious places ie. under doormats or where they can be seen from outside.

8.   Lock all doors and windows when you leave the property and always remove keys.

9.   Ladders should not be left lying around, as they are a means of gaining entry, ie. through an open window upstairs that may be left open for ventilation, ideally secure with a chain and padlock to a fixed anchor point.

10.   Always keep your Shed/Outbuildings locked as Burglars may use your tools to gain entry to your home.

11.   If you are going out for the evening consider closing the curtains and leave a light on in the lounge and the bedroom.

12.   Team up with Neighbours and form a Neighbourhood watch. Your Local Police can help you get started with good advice.

13.   Consider having a security Alarm System installed, a Burglar will almost certainly go somewhere else, they dont like to attract attention to themselves.

14.   Install peepholes with magnifying lenses to your front door and a security door chain, some can also be fitted to UPVC doors.

We've all heard the saying at some time " If they wan't to get in they will " but remember the Burglar is looking for the easy option, if you can make it hard for them they might go elsewhere.
